British statesman (1784-1865) who served twice as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in the mid-19th century. Two ALSs, both signed Palmerston, First letter is one page, both sides, and dated August 16, 1834, addressed to "My dear Auckland." In part: "I do not know whether it would be easy to treat at the French Ministry about the Tarif Question, but I am quite quite sure it would be doing an irreparable injury...I trust therefore that Bowring's agitating activity will vent itself in the Provinces and not be exerted on the Cabinet." Sir John Bowring, MP, factory owner and anti-slavery activist advocated social justice for working people. The British establishment dealt with his "agitations" by naming him Consul, later Governor of Hong Kong. Second letter is one page, dated August 13, 1861, to William and reads in part: "I am kept here today by Sweden and Portugal. I return tomorrow to sign a Marriage Treaty for Princess Alice." Victoria's daughter Alice married Prince Louis of Hesse, among their children was Alexandra, last Czarina of Russia. In fine condition, with intersecting folds to one letter and some scattered light toning.
