British colonial administrator and diplomat who served as the Governor General of the Province of Canada (1811–1863). Famous for having taken the Parthenon friezes from Athens to the British Museum, where they are still called the Elgin marbles. Free franked mailing envelope, 4.75 x 2.75, addressed in another hand to “The Lord Bruce, Broomhall, Dunfermline,” and franked in the lower left, “Elgin.” Address panel also bears an 1859 postmark from London. In fine condition, with scattered soiling.
