Lord Byron Auotgraph Letter Signed.
Lord Byron Autograph Letter Signed. Signed: Byron, one page, 7.25" x 8.75", Ravenna, Italy, June 24, 1821. Written to a Mr. Dorville Esq., Vice-Consul in Venice, it reads: "Dear Sir, A letter from Mr. Murray informs me that a parcel or packet by post (enclosing extracts from the proofs) is directed to my name and Mr. Hoppner's. If such a parcel arrives - or has arrived - I request of yr goodness to forward it by the post. It contains nothing but what I have said - & the post is the quickest conveyance. Believe me, very truly…". Byron was a leading figure in the Romanticism movement, and was associated with poets and authors such as the Shelley's and John Keats. This curly haired bard was not just known for his prolixity and prose, but also for his association with many scandals, including sodomy, forgery and infidelity! His work is still widely read today, and he is regarded as one of the finest European poets of all time. His wild abandon for life, and sexual swathe that he cut through Europe has influenced his popularity, not to mention his Alexander-like passing in the Greek fight for independence, a country that was not even his own. Byron's magnum opus, the 17 canto masterpiece, Don Juan, is considered one of the most important works to come out of England since Milton's Paradise Lost. The letter here is in fine condition; usual folds are present; tear along right edge where the original wax seal was torn; the address side is marred by later scrawling and notations. Matted along with a fabulous engraving of Byron and framed to an overall size of 20.5" x 15". This lot is a rare opportunity to obtain the holograph of a man who died young but lived forever.
