Long Land Pattern Type I Brown Bess Flintlock Musket

Manufactured circa mid-18th century, this is the Long Land Pattern Musket also known as the Type I Brown Bess. These muskets were in use around the time of the French and Indian War, or Seven Years War, through the American War for Independence. The breech section of the barrel is marked on the underside with an unidentified "IIB" maker's mark. The lock plate is unmarked and has a fine double line border. This border continues half way up the length of the hammer. It features land pattern brass furniture which included the domed side plate with tail, trigger guard, buttplate, forend cap and ramrod pipes. The full length straight grip stock with pronounced swell at base of ramrod and simple rounded panel at barrel tang. The stock has three barrel pins, a large blank brass shield positioned behind the barrel tang and a flat buttplate. The iron ramrod has a trumpet head. There are no ordnance or regimental marks visible. The musket has a Weller Collection of Princeton, New Jersey brass tag.

Good. The barrel has a mottled brown-gray patina and the action has a gray patina. Some light pitting is present on the rear section of the barrel. The brass has a smooth untouched dark aged patina. The stock is very good with a number of pressure dents and scratches with a repaired surface chip near a barrel pin.
