Long Beach,CA - Los Angeles County - c1920s - California Oil Wells Photograph :
This 10 1/2" by 5" unmounted black and white, matte finished photograph is by an unknown photographer from the Aerograph Co. in Los Angeles. This photo is clearly focused and shows little wear. There is a small bit of foxing on the upper edge of the photo about the size of a small fingerprint. The view in this photo overlooks downtown Long Beach, it's lush tree lined streets and tall buildings. More importantly, the sweeping background view takes in the hills beyond the city. These hills mistakenly look like they are tree lined but actually the treelike images are oil wells jutting skyward creating a manmade forest of its own. In the immediate foreground there is a sign advertising the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of Long Beach, lodge number 888. The BPOE started out in New York as a loose fellowship of actors and other entertainers in the 1860s as a reaction to Sunday "blue laws," it quickly formed into a serious fellowship group solemnly committed to helping those in need by February of 1868.
