<Our item number 110003>London, Jack. (1876-1916) American novelist and short-story writer. His best-known novels include The Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf, and White Fang. Typed Letter Signed, 1½ pp, 6½" x 8½", Glen Ellen, Sonoma Co., Cal., 8 Sept. 1913. Fine; lightly toned; lighter at edges from an earlier framing; encased in mylar for preservation, easily removed. The signature is large and bold. Superb content about the dog from The Call of the Wild and about London's own dog, Brown Wolf, who died of a broken heart. A photocopy of the short story, "Brown Wolf" is included.

Replying to a letter from Constance C. Crichton, London regrets that he is behind in his correspondence because he has had his appendix removed (8 July 1913) and his house burned down (22 Aug. 1913). He writes, in part: "The letter you received from Marshall Bond [a gold miner from Santa Clara, California, whom Jack met in th e Klondike in 1897] is correct in every particular. It was his dog I knew; it was his father's house I wrote about, and the history of the dog was the history of his dog, except for the last part, where I went into the realm of romance. I do not know whether or not the dog still lives….I had a husky down here in California, who died a death of heartbreak. This occurred when I left him behind in California and sailed on the SNARK on my South Sea voyage. Brown Wolf was the name of my dog. In some one of my collections of short stories, you will find a story entitled BROWN WOLF, which is written about him. My Brown Wolf died because he lost me--the only man in the world he would love…."
Estimated Value $4,000-6,000.

Our item number 110003
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
