Livingston Family, Patroons of New York, Autograph Archive. A landholder in New Netherland who, under Dutch colonial rule, was granted proprietary and manorial rights to a large tract of land in exchange for bringing 50 new settlers to the colony was called a patroon. It was essentially a feudal form of government and a Scotsman named Robert Livingston was one of these early patroons. He was awarded a tract of 160,000 acres of land that formed Livingston Manor in what is now Columbia and Dutchess counties in New York. He was the first lord of the manor and was very active in politics, acting as Secretary for Indian Affairs and as a representative in the New York provincial assembly. His descendents and family members figure very heavily in the development and success of the state of New York and the United States as a whole. Just a few of the illustrious Livingstons that are represented by autograph material in this lot are as follows:

Brockholst Livingston- Supreme Court Justice, Revolutionary War officer.

Edward L. Livingston- Secretary of State under Van Buren, Mayor of New York City.

James Livingston- Revolutionary War officer, helped expose Benedict Arnold as a traitor.

Robert Livingston Jr.- Mayor of New York CIty.

Robert R. Livingston "The Chancellor"- a delegate to the New York state constitutional convention and a member of the committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence. Administered the oath of office to George Washington at his first inauguration.

Walter Livingston- Continental Congress delegate.

William Livingston- The first governor of New Jersey, succeeded William Franklin who was the last Royal governor, also a Continental Congress delegate.

This is just a tiny sampling of the members of this important family that the winning bidder will find. It seems likely that this is the largest holding of Livingston autograph material to be offered to the public in more than 50 years. These documents and letters are in generally very good to fine condition. Extensive background and biographical material will be included with the lot. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
