<td width="100%">
Five old livery buttons - worn by servants on their livery, and bearing the crest of the household (Lion Rampant over bar in this case). Fronts are silvered metal, and the rear of the buttons are coppery looking. They are stamped with the maker?s name: ?R.E.Hayward, 21 Bouverie St, London?. Buttons are 26 mm diameter (1 inch) and have loop backs. We have 5 smaller identical buttons for sale elsewhere in this category. Excellent condition.
These buttons came out with one of the first Wanganui families here in New Zealand, who intended to recruit household servants from amongst the local population. However, the Maoris turned out to be not very servile, in fact outright against the idea, and they were never used.
