Liverpool Pitcher Beheading of Louis XVI
Extremely Rare Liverpool Creamware Pitcher Depicting The Guillotining Of France's King Louis XVI
Front features scene of "Massacre of the French King." Below is: "La Guillotine, or the Modern Beheading Machine at Paris. By which the unfortunate Louis XVI (late King of France) suffered on a scaffold, June 21, 1793." Reverse depicts a Medusa-like harridan identified as "French Liberty." She carries a head stuck on a trident, and in the background is a hanged victim of the Revolution. Below: "Atheism, Perjury, Rebellion, Treason, Anarchy, Murder, Equality, Madness, Cruelty, Injustice, Treachery, Ingratitude, Idleness, Famine, National and Private Ruin, Misery." The highly charged politics of the 1790's, in both Britain and America (where this pitcher may well have been marketed) involved extreme polarization over the ongoing Revolution in France. Clearly this item was intended for those opposed to the changes in France! Relates to the familiar Thomas Paine tokens of the time (Paine was a supporter of the French Revolution). An extremely desirable subject, and an exceedingly rare transfer (we consulted with one of the country's leading Liverpool collectors, with nearly 30 years of experience, and he has never seen another example). Condition is beautiful, and all original save for partial restoration of the handle. Height 7 1/4".

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. Lot:27482
