c1919 Lot 58: This representative collection of the famous tiny books is quite a find. These books were initially started by Haldeman-Julius Publishers to educate the "everyman." They became known as the People's Pocket series, or the Appeal Pocket series. They sold for 5 cents a copy (20 min. order) and at their height supported 1873 different titles. So popular did they become (especially during the Depression years) that H-J Publishers were called the "Henry Ford of Literature." These tiny books covered such catagories as mythology, Shakespere, homosexuality, languages, architecture, authors like Voltaire, H.G. Wells, and Thoreau. As an example, 1 book, #466, is titled "The History of Sculpture," by Murray Sheehan. Following WWII, J. Edgar Hoover put Haldeman & Julius on the "Enemies List" for their socialist views. The Girard Press was destroyed by fire in 1978. All these books are in very good to excellent condition. Each measures a diminutive 5"x3.25". - HKA#65630
