Military officer (1842–1876) and Custer loyalist who was killed in action as captain of Company F at Little Bighorn. Ink signature as captain of the 7th Cavalry, "Geo. W. Yates,” on an off-white 3.5 x 2.25 slip clipped from the close of a document. In fine condition. Yates was killed during the Battle of the Little Bighorn and fell near Custer. According to some accounts, he is said to have taken command of the battalion after the initial fighting at Medicine Tail Coulee, where Custer may have been wounded. Other accounts suggest that he commanded a wing of Custer's battalion, composed of Companies E and F.
