Lithograph of Outdoors Lake & Trees
"Wivenhow Park, Essex" By John Constable ( 1776-1837) The British artist Constable was overwhelmed with nature. The immediate source for his paintings was nature, however, what determined his response tonature was the Romantic movement. The movement, in which nature assumed a new importance and served as a constant source of inspiration for most of the poets of th age, accounted in a large measure for Constable's life-long devotion almostexclusively to landscape. "Wivenhoe Park, Essex" was painted in 1816 while Constable was visiting a close friend of his father in Essex. It is the direct feeling for the out-of-doors that is one of the most remarkableaspects of this painting. His use of lighting effect and composition is characteristic of his works. This reproduction is a detail from this famous painting. The painting, from the Widener Collection, is located in the National Gallery ofArt, Washington, D.C.
