Lionel Mark 1 U.S. Navy copper binnacle cover with oil-lamp light box on side and handle on top. 2033 grams; 9-1/2" x 8-3/4" x 7". This object has the appearance of a simple lantern, with thin handle at top and angled glass window in one side, L-shaped railing hook on back, but the open bottom reveals that it was made to be placed on top of a ship's binnacle (stand-mounted compass), with a smaller rectangular on the right side for holding the actual illumination device, fully intact but attractively oxidized all over, great for display. From the collection of Dr. E. Lee Spence, who recovered this piece. From: Unidentified World War II wreck in Charleston harbor
