Lionel Brioux, The Flower Collector, France, 1879
The present decorative meadow landscape is the work of the French landscape painter Lionel Brioux and dates from 1879. The mellow and picturesque composition shows numerous green shades. Amid the finely painted trees, plants and lawns stands a flowers collector, completely absorbed in the moment. The light of the cloudy sky gives the painting a pleasant atmosphere.

The painting is signed and dated lower right, ‘Lionel Brioux 1879’. The back of the stretcher is probably inscribed by a different hand, ‘La Mazurie Carolles’ (place in Normandy). The paint surface shows scattered small color losses and light craquelure. The varnish is slightly discolored. Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of retouching, mainly along the edges, and some retouched framing marks in the center. The gilt stucco frame shows minimal nicks. The overall dimensions, framed, are 67 x 85 cm. The stretcher measures 45 x 65.5 cm.

Lionel Brioux (19th C)

Born in Angers, the landscape painter Lionel Brioux was a student of Charles-François Daubigny (1817-1878). Between 1864 and 1888, he exhibited several times at the Paris Salon. His favorite subjects were picturesque ruin landscapes. The painter Henri Lionel Brioux from Angers was probably his brother and also exhibited at the Paris Salon.
