American chemist (1901–1994) who holds the unique distinction of winning Nobel Prizes in both the Chemistry (1954) and Peace (1962) categories. TLS, one page, 8 x 11, Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine letterhead, June 9, 1975. Pauling responds to an inquiry by Richard Van Alstine. In full: “In answer to your letter, I may say that I was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for my ‘Research on the nature of the chemical bond, including its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances.’ Much of the work was the application of quantum mechanics to the problem, mostly during the years 1928 to 1933.” In very good condition, with a small hole near the bottom of the page, even toning at the top and bottom edges, and light horizontal lines at top and bottom edges from prior storage in a magnetic photo album.
