<B>Lindbergh Kidnapper Bruno Hauptmann Check Endorsed,</B></I> "<I>Bruno Richard Hauptmann</B></I>". Check for one dollar, 2.75" x 6", drawn on the Bridgeton National Bank by one Earl McCormick, Bridgeton, New Jersey, January 15, 1936. Heavily cancelled with perforations that do not touch upon Hauptmann's endorsement. Folds, overall browning and small water stain obscuring "<I>Bruno</B></I>" on the verso. The signature is, however, quite legible and very rare. Hauptmann, a fairly shady German immigrant, was charged with the abduction and slaying of Charles Lindbergh, Jr. on March 1, 1932. He was convicted of the crime in the "trial of the century" and was executed on April 3, 1936. This check was sent to Hauptmann while he was on Death Row. A well-wisher sending cigarette money, perhaps? Not everyone, including New Jersey's governor, were convinced of Hauptmann's guilt since the evidence presented was questionable.
