Lincoln's Secretary of War Simon Cameron Signs as a Sixteen Year old Hospital worker at Fort McHenry; along with the Forts Commanding Officer On April 12,1815 a receipt for payment for 85 days of labor at TEN CENTS PER DAY. The payment is authorized by Lt. Col. James Armistad, who a few months earlier had made the authorship of "The Star Spangled Banner" possible by keeping the flag flying over Ft. McHenry; "... by the dawn's early light..." during the British bombardment. Measures 8.0" x 7.25" and signed twice by Cameron, at the bottom and on verso. Fine appearance, with old amateur repair of fine horizontal separation along original crease line. The Fort's hospital nursed victims of the British attack, and young Cameron signed on as a temporary worker. A unique historical curiosity. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
