Lincoln's Partner, William Herndon, Autograph Document Signed, "Lincoln & Herndon", one page with docketing, 7.75" x 10", Mason County, Illinois, January 19, 1858. One John Calhoun sues Edward O. and Harriet Smith regarding a "Bill in Chancery for Specific Performance". The document is entirely in Herndon's hand and he signs on behalf of his law firm rather than with his given name. Herndon despised the institution of slavery and was quick to join the Republican Party upon its formation. He credited himself - as Lincoln's law partner - of influencing the future president's views on slavery. Somewhat of a gadfly, Herndon agitated for a more vigorous prosecution of the war and, later, for a more aggressive reconstruction policy. One small split on a fold, light stains. Overall fine condition.
