Lincoln commissions a wounded Gettysburg veteran

Abraham Linocln (1809-1865), President, partly-printed Document Signed "Abraham Lincoln" as President, one page on vellum, 15.75" x 19.75", Washington, August, 1, 1864, a military commission promoting Thomas H. Hay as "...First Lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps..." Countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton ("E M Stanton"). Document festooned with an eagle at top and a symbolic display of military accruements at bottom. On July 2, 1865, Hay as a first lieutenant in the 54th New York Infantry, lost 102 men at Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg. Hay was severely wounded in his left leg during the battle, and had it amputated. He then served with the Reserve Corps until he retired in 1870. Unusually bold and clear example of Lincoln's signature with no feathering or skipping. Usual folds, otherwise very good condition. A superior commission for anyone wishing a single example to own. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
