Lincoln and Hamlin Republican Standard Bearers
Extremely Rare 1860 Lincoln & Hamlin Jugate Ribbon with Salt Print Images Attached. This style of ribbon comes in several forms: single picture and jugate, with printed text and without. However, we doubt there are more than a dozen or so known examples of all varieties, This is, of course, the most desirable, being a jugate with text. It is especially nice because the color of the silk is striking, and provides excellent contrast for the type. An example appears in Sullivan and Fischer, and the only other copy we know of is in far inferior condition. The images themselves are somewhat light, as is often the case with salt prints. The ribbon itself is in good shape, with minimal light "aging", and complete original fine fringe, as made, across top and bottom.

1860 was the first election to see extensive use of photographic images, and various forms were being experimented with: ambrotypes, salt prints, tintypes, and albumen photos - even a few daguerreotypes. Tintypes and albumens proved by far the most practical, and others had all but died out by the 1864 election. There are only a few varieties of jugate ribbons for Lincoln and Hamlin, with a total known population of perhaps 50 for all varieties. This salt print version is one of the rarest and most significant.
