Lincoln Walking Stick Made From Fence Rail
Unique Abraham Lincoln Walking Stick made from a Piece of his Fence Rail. When first presented with this item our first reaction was "too good to be true!" However, upon careful examination, we are convinced that this is a correct and significant Lincoln artifact. The grip is made of silver and an 1860 United States quarter has been set into the top. Engraved on one side along with some vine-like decoration "Lincoln Fence Rail." On the opposite side: "No. 147 R.M. to W.B.W."

The patina on the metal is utterly convincing, and the engraving shows the effects of gradual wear from long use. Accrued deep tarnish in the crevices and recesses, including the engraving itself, while the smooth surfaces are clear from years of handling and probably occasional polishing. The wood shaft itself also shows the dings and accrued patina of long use.

It cannot be said with exact certainty just when this piece was crafted; it could date from the 1860 election or thereabouts, or possibly as late as a couple of decades after. However, there is no doubt that it is an unmolested and "righteous" old piece, and there is no reason to doubt the assertion that the wood comes from an original Lincoln rail. A wonderful piece for the Lincoln collector as well as for cane enthusiasts (who are legion)!
