He served on General Grant&#39;s staff during the last few months of the Civil War, was U.S. Secretary of War &#40;1881-85&#41;, U.S. Minister to Great Britain &#40;1884-93&#41;, and president of the Pullman Company &#40;1897-1911&#41;.
