The sheriff of Sangamon County is directed to summon "Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Talbott, Charles Arnold, & Peter Van Bergen" to appear and give evidence in the case of Stephen T. Logan vs James Adams. A sheriff's docket on verso indicates all of the parties were served <I>"by reading the within Mar. 10th 1840". </B></I> During his legal career Lincoln probably directed the issuance of hundreds of subpoenas; it is very unusual to find him on the receiving end!
