<B>Lincoln Law Partner William Henry Herndon Autograph Endorsement Signed</B></I> "<I>The certificate of the justice or mayor is hereby waived between S.T. Logan and ourselves the undersigned Lincoln, Herndon & Ferguson</B></I>". Springfield (Ill.), 6 November 1850, two and three-quarters pages, folio, on blue paper. A deposition by Leroy L. Hill in the suit of William Enyart vs Smith McAtee, signed by Hill and by John Calhoun, who as mayor of Springfield certifies that the testimony was made in his presence (while county surveyor years before, Calhoun had hired Lincoln as his deputy, and in the mid-1850s figured prominently in the pro-slavery troubles in "Bleeding Kansas"). Hill testifies about an arbitration held several years before at McAtee's house on Horse Creek, which involved a "<I>fine mare</B></I>" and saddle Enyart had taken in part payment for some land. Having subsequently complained about the "<I>age of the mare and the price of the saddle</B></I>", Enyart agreed to have the matter arbitrated by several men, including Hill. The last question posed by the defendant in this document is "<I>Did Enyart appear to be duly sober at the time?</B></I>" to which Hill replies "<I>I think he was sober.</B></I>" This involved case was finally settled in 1852 when the Illinois Supreme Court affirmed a lower court's finding that McAtee had committed fraud by getting Enyart to convey his land after getting him drunk. <I>From the Henry E.
