Lincoln Law Partner William Henry Herndon Autograph Document Signed "Lincoln & Herndon p.q.". Menard Co., Ill., December 1846, one and two-thirds pages, folio. Plaintiff Josiah James, administrator of the estate of Harlan Hatch, complains that at Sugar Grove in August 1844 William Engle gave Hatch a promissory note for $311.38 but "hath not as yet paid the said sum or any part thereof" and asks for $500 damages. Records show that this suit was dismissed on 2 December 1846 by agreement, at the defendant's cost. An unusually early Herndon document, dated just about two years after he commenced his long partnership with Lincoln. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
