Lincoln & Johnson Monumentally Important Jugate
Lincoln & Johnson: The Monumentally Important Jugate Pinback Ferrotype Badge from the 1864 Election. It has long been a tradition among political collectors to attempt to assemble a complete run of jugate pinbacks, beginning with the first photographic jugates which appeared in 1860. Among celluloid buttons, the "Holy Grail" has always been the Cox & Roosevelt jugate of 1920. Yet Cox & Roosevelts outnumber this Lincoln & Johnson jugate by a ratio of approximately 10 to 1! This jugate is so elusive that during our first 25 years in the hobby, not a single example is known to have changed hands. Up until the early 1990s there were only three known examples: one in the Neil Porter collection, one in the U.I. Harris collection, and the one pictured in the Sullivan book (whereabouts unknown). Since then, three additional copies have come to light, including this superb one, found in a Florida estate in the early 1990s, and since then part of the legendary Joe Brown collection. The condition is virtually pristine and, to a true lover of campaign memorabilia its presence is nothing short of breathtaking. The last one known to have changed hands was a private sale at a price level somewhat in excess of $40,000. All the other known examples are now deeply ensconced in major collections, and it may be many years before another copy comes to market. Original pin on reverse, measures 31mm x 33mm.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
