Lincoln & Hamlin: Rare Large 1860 Jugate Chart
Lincoln & Hamlin: A Rare Large 1860 Jugate "National Republican Chart." Bold central image of the two running mates shortly after their nomination at the Chicago Convention, May 18, 1860. Surrounding the portraits is the zigzag image of a split rail fence. Below is a map indicating free and slave states and territories, presaging the issue which would dominate Lincoln's presidency. Around the perimeter are portraits and short biographies of each of the first 15 U.S. presidents.

These large political posters, often designated as "charts" first appeared in the mid 1850s. That appellation doubtless comes from the fact that they often conveyed detailed information and statistics, as well as picturing the candidates. Some of the earliest versions depicted all the candidates, but the style featuring a single party's ticket emerged in 1860. Such jugate charts are seen for every major ticket through 1884, save for the 1864 election, and are much sought after by collectors. Condition is often an issue with these, as they tend to be found with paper staining, cracks and flaking. The present example is in distinctly superior condition. The paper has evenly aged to a beige tone, but it is remarkably free of damage or defects, having only two trivial small stain marks near right and left edge. One of the nicest and most colorful large political display items from Lincoln's campaign, and doubly desirable for its jugate portraits. Measures 26" x 36".

Shipping: Framed - with Glass, Large (view shipping information)
