Lincoln & Hamlin: Rare 1864 Campaign Broadside
Lincoln & Johnson: Ultra-Rare 1864 Campaign Broadside of the "Union Platform" as "Adopted by the National Convention at Baltimore. June 7, 1864." A majestic 17.75" x 23.75" in size with a large, centered image of Abraham Lincoln inside a laurel wreath at the top above the text of the Party Platform; an image of vice presidential candidate Andrew Johnson is centered between images of Generals U. S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman at bottom. Other graphic devices are beautifully arranged around the perimeter including American flags with various Civil War battles named inside the stripes, banners reading "Free Home," "Slavery," "United We Stand, Divided We Fall," and vignettes picturing slaves as well as other patriotic and emotional figures. Lithographed by Kurtz & Nelke of Chicago.

In 1864, with a Union victory nearly assured based on Sherman's march toward Atlanta and Grant's successes against Lee at Richmond, the Republicans nominated a coalition ticket with Tennessee Democrat Andrew Johnson as the vice presidential candidate. The Republican Party changed its name to the Union Party in order to further appeal to "War Democrats," and used "Don't change horses in the middle of a stream" as a slogan. The Lincoln & Johnson ticket easily defeated the anti-war Democratic ticket of McClellan & Pendleton. In several states, soldiers in the field were allowed to vote and Lincoln received over 70% of their votes.

None of us here have ever seen this amazing poster before and a cursory search located only one other in an institutional collection. This may be a once in a lifetime opportunity to own this desirable piece. Condition is excellent with some professional restoration to the edges that would easily mat out. This is a simply gorgeous piece with wonderful eye appeal, certainly a centerpiece in even the most advanced Lincoln collection.

Shipping: Framed - without Glass, Large (view shipping information)
