Lincoln, Douglas, Bell, et al.- 1860 Candidates Cartoon
Lithograph titled at bottom "'Taking The Stump' or Stephen In Search Of His Mother." Depicts all four 1860 candidates, including Bell and Breckinridge, as well as outgoing President James Buchanan. Stephen Douglas is on a wooden leg/crutch and begging for coins exclaiming "Gentlemen, I'm going to see my mother, and solicit a little help, for in running after a nomination, I fell over a big lump of Breckinridge, and have been lame ever since." The others make witty remarks and lampoon Douglas. Lincoln chimes in "Go it ye cripples! Wooden legs are cheap, but stumping wont save you." Published by Currier and Ives, 1860. [Images: 9-1/8" x 15-1/2"; Sheet: 13 x 17-3/4"]. Light age-toning with margin defects including soiling and stain at top right edge.
