This lot contains approximately ten authenticated strands of Surratt's hair housed in a plastic pouch and laid down on a presentation document. Also on the presentation document are: an "Image of Mary Surratt taken from a contemporary CDV owned by Samuel Curtis"; a copy of an entry from the original diary kept by Samuel Curtis, who obtained the hair, referencing the hair, and a photograph of Surratt and the conspirators seated on the gallows shortly before they were executed. Samuel Curtis was a member of the 8th Regiment that was present at the execution of four conspirators in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln at the Old Penitentiary in Washington, D.C. Surratt was hung along with three men who had conspired with Booth. She is reported to have been the first to die. The hair was obtained by Curtis shortly after her death, he likely to have been one of the men at the foot of the gallows. A letter of authenticity accompanies this presentation, it is signed by University Archives President John Reznikoff.
