Lincoln, Bell & Everett - 1860 ...Salt River Cartoon
1860 Currier & Ives cartoon titled "Political 'Blondins' Crossing Salt River." The cartoon actually favors John Bell & Edward Everett who stand safely on the "Constitutional Bridge." Abraham Lincoln and Horace Greeley teeter-totter on a rail whose fulcrum is the "Abolition Rock". Stephen Douglas uses a "Squatter Sovereignty" balance bar, but trips up on the "Non-Intervention" rope. John C. Breckinridge tries to make it across on James Buchanan's shoulders, straddling the "Slavery Extension" rope. [Image: 10-5/8" x 16-1/2"; Sheet 13-1/2" x 18"]. Matted and hinged to mount with archival tape. Uneven age-toning with picture plane darker than margins and few light smudges.
