In a letter dated 18 September 1899, Metropolitan Police Superintendent A.C. Richards, who was in the audience at Ford’s Theater the night President Lincoln was assassinated, writes to Louis Weichmann, chief prosecution witness at the assassination conspirators' trial. Richards, who was also involved in the search for the conspirators, reviews his account of events for Weichmann's book on the assassination. Richards states, ''…A demand was made upon me for the hat, pistol and some other articles of the President that were handed to me in the theatre box that night. You may remember that at about 11 o'clock…I sent to the War Dept. for a…dozen cavalry horses…in pursuit of some persons whom we had learned from the guard at the Navy Yard bridge had crossed into Md. soon after 11 o'clock…It was 11 o'clock next morning when they were delivered…Had the horses been furnished promptly Booth and Herold would have been overtaken on their way to Dr. Mudd's…'' Signed, ''A.C. Richards''. Dr. Mudd set Booth's broken leg, enabling him to continue his flight from Washington. Six page letter is written front and verso on three 5'' x 7.75'' paperclipped sheets. A 5'' x 2.75'' initialed postscript is also included. Very good.
