Abraham Lincoln assassination letter, dated 5 August 1900, from Almarin C. Richards, Washington, D.C. Police Superintendent who hunted down the conspirators, to Louis Weichmann, prosecution witness and former friend of the Surratt family. Richards refers to George Loring Porter, doctor for the imprisoned conspirators who was present at their execution as well as at John Wilkes Booth's burial. Richards writes, ''...Of course I was somewhat interested in the Rev. Porter's narrative, but I realize the fact that he is not in the article stating facts in the main of which he had personal knowledge -- simply reiterates what he has heard from others although he writes as if he were stating matters he had witnessed in person...papers have been publishing for years statements in which the writers conveyed the idea that they were giving to the public that of which they knew personally. Some have claimed personal knowledge when their statements showed conclusively that they romancing. Of course you will point out a number of errors into which this doctor of physic and doctor of divinity has fallen. I recognize the face you send as that of a person I used to see often in Washington, but did not personally know. He has made in issue of fact with Miss Ida M. Tarbell...I do not think this man's statement that he was the only 'commissioned' officer present at the disposition of the Booth body by any means proves that non-commissioned officers and others have not spoken the truth. A 'commission' adds little sanctity in my mind to statements made by its bearer for I have known some very vile men to hold commissions...'' 7.75'' x 9.75'' single page letter, front and verso, is in very good condition. Accompanied by a photo copy, somewhat grainy, of Richards with his Metropolitan Police force shortly after the assassination.
