Partly-printed vellum DS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, July 1, 1874. Army of the United States discharge document. In part: “Charles Roller a Hospital Steward…is hereby discharged from the Army of the United States in consequence of S. O. No. 143.” Signed at the conclusion by Charles Henry Crane, “C. H. Crane,” and endorsed by John Shaw Billings, “J. S. Billings, Asst Surg USA.” Crane had attended to Lincoln after he was shot by John Wilkes Booth and was present at the president’s autopsy, and Billings served in the field at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Petersburg, and later developed the surgeon general’s medical library. In fine condition, with expected document wear.
