A humorous rendering, which features a delicate execution

This scroll painting by Lin Jia (1874-1939) shows a grazing cow on the banks of a river. A shepherd boy with a delicately rendered face is riding on the back of the bull. The painter from Zhao‘an, Fujian province, is known for his figure drawings and paintings of birds and flowers. The humorous illustration appears fine despite the vigorous brushwork and intense color application.



The work is mounted on paper. It is signed upper left and stamped with two seals. The painting has a suspension for hanging. There is a label on the back of the mount.



The scroll painting shows visible signs of wear. The paper is browned with foxing. There are water stains. The mount shows tears and material loss along the borders. The overall size is 135 x 34.5 cm and the image size is 76 x 23 cm.
