Limited Edition of The Love Books of Ovid 1925
Featured in this lot is this 1925 limited edition of "The Love Books of Ovid", published by John Lane - The Bodley Head Limited in London and printed by Richard Clay & Sons, Ltd., Bungay, Suffolk. Amores, Ars Amatoria, Remedia Amoris, and Medicamina Faciei Femineae—among Ovid's most well-known love poems—are translated in this volume from Latin by J. Lewis May and illustrated by Jean de Bosschère. There were only 3,000 copies of this edition, and this copy is number 2999. Bosschère created vivid, sensual color plates for the book's illustrations, which perfectly capture the passionate and lighthearted erotica of Ovid's writing. Ovid's examination of love, seduction, and relationships is deepened by his pictures, which are renowned for their outstanding Art Deco and Symbolist inspirations. The book is bound in complete dark blue leather, and the covers have ornamental corner embellishments and elaborate gilded ruling. The title is in gilt letters on the spine, along with raised bands and gilt flower designs. The book shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. It measures 9 3/4" L x 6 3/8" W x 1 1/2" D and weighs 1 pound and 14 ounces.
