Light Consumes Coal (Lot of 4) 28 x 20 WWI Light Consumes Coal
Light Consumes Coal (Lot of 4) 28" x 20" Artist: Clarence Cole Phillips. Printed by the United States Fuel Administration. This poster is extremely scarce and of course extremely desirable. Phillips set a flat bulb shape against an art deco style pattern of vines within a circle, a treatment similar to one conceived by Peter Behrens in 1907 for the German General Electric Company. Behrens poster featured a flat bulb against a circle background with a lined pattern inside it. This WWI poster represents the minimalist style of poster art which was perfected in Europe during the early part of the century by artists like Behrens and Hohlwein. It is a wonderful expression of simplicity with a strong message behind it. It is highly desired for its artist design and style. Phillips unites the direct elements of German poster art with the flowery and intricate patterns of Art Nouveau. Phillips was known primarily for his "fade-away girls" who wore clothing the same color as the background behind them, and they seemed to melt away into the page. He was a master of rendering images both simplistic and complicated, often leaving it to the viewer to complete the image in their minds. This is his only known war poster. Here is a rare opportunity to purchase four of these amazing posters in one shot. Must not be missed! <r<r Condition-Poster #1-Good; severe tear on upper edge into graphic, minor tears on lower edge, edges are slightly wrinkled from uneven rolling. <r<r Poster #2-Good; severe tear on upper edge into graphic, minor tears on lower edge, edges are slightly wrinkled from uneven rolling. <r<r Poster #3-Good; severe tear on upper edge into graphic, minor tears on lower edge, edges are slightly wrinkled from uneven rolling. <r<r Poster #4-Good; several minor tears on edges, right edge has a small piece about to fall off, otherwise fine.
