Lida,NV - Esmeralda County - c1905 - Assay Office Photograph :
A view of three men in an assaying office, no photographer listed. Shows good focus in foreground, two men in background less visible due to back lighting. Good contrast. Photo approximately 6 1/2 x 4 3/4", mounted on black 10 x 8" backing. "Ross & Lawrence-Lida-Nevada" written in new ink at bottom left. Names likely two of the men in the photograph, as W.C. Ross, Druggist, Lida, POLK'S, 1906 listed under Alpha Listings of Nevada Businesses from Directories 1886-1925. (Ref: Haddock, 1988) "Frank Lawrence 134 North Main Salt Lake City Utah" handwritten on reverse. Lida was located 22 miles southwest of Goldfield. Lida Valley was laid out in 1872 after prospectors established a district in the valley in 1867. A post office, originally established in Inyo County, CA, was established. Mining declined in the late 1870s, and by 1880 the camp had few open businesses. When the 1905 Goldfield boom began, Lida "caught its second wind," but by 1907 the camp had again declined. The district accounted for almost $1 million in precious metals. (Ref: NV Ghost Towns and Mining Camps, Paher, 1970, p. 410)
