Libyan Desert Glass from Libya/Egypt Border
For your consideration are these pieces of Libyan Desert Glass found near the border of Libya and Egypt. Libyan Desert Glass, also know as Egyptian Desert Glass , is a rare impact glass found in only one remote location on Earth, near the Libyan/Egyptian border. It is associated with an ancient meteorite impact, which occurred somewhere in the North African deserts. Quality specimens are translucent, and also display pseudo regmaglypts (shallow depressions or dimples that form on the surface of some meteorites as they pass through Earth's atmosphere) possibly caused by wind erosion, or by ablation when molten fragments were thrown into the air following the impact. Libyan Desert Glass is now extremely difficult to obtain, as removing material from the site is prohibited by the Egyptian government. There are three Desert Glass pieces in this collection showing slightly different colors and translucency. Two pieces show a cloudy yellow color, displaying some pseudo regmaglypts throughout the pieces. The third piece shows a cloudy white color with only some pseudo regmaglypts throughout the piece. The pieces are similar in size, with the more cloudy white piece measuring 1 3/8" L x 3/4" W x 3/4" H. The cloudy yellow pieces measure 1 3/4" x 1" W x 3/8" H and 1" L x 7/8" W x 1/2" H.
