Liberty Loan Committee Lot #2 (Lot of 24 ) WWI Liberty Loan Committee Lot #2
Liberty Loan Committee Lot #2 (Lot of 24) The Liberty Loan Committee was responsible for promoting the Liberty Loans and charitable offerings for the war effort. In a 1917 brochure they outlined what exactly these loans would work by printing; "Price: Par; that is, a $50 bond costs $50, a $100 bond $110, etc. Interest: 3 1/2% payable one-half each six months; June 15th and December 15th. Amounts: $50, $100, $500, $1000 and larger. Bonds Mature: June 15th 1947, but Government may redeem at any interest date on or after June 15th, 1932, at par and interest." Now that Americans would understand where their money wen and how they would be compensated, they had to be inspired to donate it. These posters printed by the Liberty Loan Committee used everything from guilt to pride to gain donations from Americans. They played the guilt and tragedy card by telling Americans how German would cut down every tree in France to starve its people, and it evoked patriotic feelings by showing us our flag and many proud men serving our country every day. This lot features a smattering of each type of poster. Twenty four posters in total, all unique, with a special brand of propaganda. The messages used on these posters and the style and artistic rendering with which they were expressed is completely unique to this era and what makes them priceless objects in the cultural record. All posters in this lot measure 25" x 19".

This lot includes; "It's alright if the folks at home are with me!"; "The Men of the A.E.F. Expect That" x 2; "What's Back of Every Bond" x2; "The Danger of Optimism"; "When the Bonds Mature"; "Have I Done Enough?" x2; "Leave No Tree In France Standing"; "A "Service Star" in your pocketbook" x2; "America Shall Pay For This"; "Her Boy"; "Shoulder to Shoulder"; "Blind The Huns"; "The Highest Price"; "Your Boy and My Boy"; "Reward This Sacrifice"; "America's Answer"; "They Bled and Died on This Spot"; "Making Dollars Into Munitions"; "Our Allies Are Watching Us"; "Index of the Following." A great example of propaganda art in this lot is the "They Bled and Died on This Spot" poster. The poster depicts, a doughboy dead on the ground next to his machine gun. He died while fighting. His soul or ghost floats above him with arms outstretched with a look of desperation on his face. This is a very drastic image, and would have shocked many Americans. But without the internet and television the war had to portrayed to people via pictures, be they drawn or photographs. This image would have been very upsetting and heartbreaking to Americans. The goal was to provoke Americans into giving more funds, and one of the best ways to sell something is guilt. This is a wonderful smattering of posters and propaganda. A great chance to own many of them at once! Bid Today!
