Liberty Loan Committee Lot #1 (Lot of 15) WWI Liberty Loan Committee Lot #1
Liberty Loan Committee Lot #1 (Lot of 15) The Liberty Loan Committee was responsible for promoting the Liberty Loans and charitable offerings for the war effort. In a 1917 brochure they outlined what exactly these loans would be used for by printing; " The entire proceeds of this loan will be in this country and will be used in the payment of labor and the purchase of food and in the purchase of the products of our farms and factories. The Northwest and Madison will benefit greatly from the money spent here to buy our products. A part of this first offering will be loaned by our Government to the Allies, but not a dollar will leave this country to pay for other than American products. This money is loaned to the Allies, who give full security for repayment , so that they may continue to enter our markets and to pay us for our products. It all comes back to us finally in payment for labor and material. It will broaden the market for our goods and increase demand for what we have to seel and make for bigger better business not only throughout the Northwest, but the entire country!" Now that Americans would understand where their money went, they had to inspired to donate it. These posters printed by the Liberty Loan Committee used everything from guilt to pride to gain donations from Americans. They played the guilt and tragedy card by telling Americans how Germans had been given medals of valor for sinking an American hospital ship, and it evoked patriotic feelings by showing us our flag and many proud men serving our country every day. All posters in this lot measure 25" x 19".

This lot features a smattering of each type of poster. Fifteen posters in total, all unique, with a special brand of propaganda. The messages used on these posters and the style and artistic rendering with which they were expressed is completely unique to this era and what makes them priceless objects in the cultural record. This lot includes; "Bonds Build Boats"; "What Is My Share"; "What The National Security League Wants"; "Keep Up The Supplies"; "Like Father Like Son"; "How High Will You Go?"; "On Our Own Shores"; "The Turning Point of the War"; "Dollars to Fight This Sort of Thing"; "It's In The Blood"; "Be A Coupon Cutter"; "Avenge Them"; "It's For the Boy, Father"; "On With The Tanks"; and "-And they give iron crosses for this?" The most dramatic and patriotic are one in the same poster; the "-And they give iron crosses for this?" It depicts a large Red Cross ship sinking into the sea, as several life boats flee the scene and a single nurse floats dead on her back in the foreground as she slips below the waves. A heart wrenching scene when one considers that a hospital ship would be of little threat to a German U-Boat. The poster reads, "Humanity's great heart was beating in sympathy with the wounded men who crowded this hospital ship. Red Cross nurses, dedicated to the highest service of God and Man, were ministering in their own sweet way to men who had fallen in a fair and open fight. And yet this sanctuary of human suffering was considered by the Hun a fair target for German shells. If God made man a little lower than the angles, the Germans have made themselves infinetly lower than the beasts. Oh, Americans, let's stamp this thing down NOW. Buy Liberty Bonds with every cent you can possibly spare and they more on installments with all you can save in the months to come." This poster certainly minces no words or applies no political correctness to its message. A wonderful example of propaganda; and this lot is full of them! Bid today!
