Location:6270 Este Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio, 45232, United States
salted paper photograph by C. Levy of Richmond, 1863, mounted on 4.5" x 4" cardstock with calligraphic inscription Presented by Capt. H. W. Sawyer and Libby Prison, and further on verso most respectfully your H.W. Sawyer, Capt. 1st N.J.C.

Sawyer, a Captain with the 1st New Jersey cavalry, is listed as being taken prisoner at Thoroughfare Gap, Virginia on June 21,1863. He was originally confined at Macon, Georgia, but presumably was transferred to Libby Prison. He was apparently paroled and promoted to Major in October of the same year, mustering out in 1865. A fine souvenir that was part of an extensive collection belonging to 19th century Denver, Colorado antiquarian W.H. Hammersley. Accompanied by an obituary of Hammersley.
