printed 3pp circular, 8.25 x 5.25" New York, 342 West 14th Street, June 21, 1897, together with the original transmittal envelope, with the salutation Dear Sir. In this circular, sent to General Thomas H. Ruger in his retirement in Easton, Pennsylvania, Libbie defends her late husband against accusations made in the January, 1896 issue of the Journal of the Military Service Institution that he lost his life (and those of nearly his entire command) as a result of disobeying orders. She reprints the last orders Custer received from General Alfred Terry, and attempts to cast doubt that there was an additional, now-lost, communication between Custer and Terry.

After the disaster on the Little Big Horn, Libbie spent the rest of her life defending her late husband and his judgment. This is a typical example, likely sent to a number of regular Army officers she thought might influence public opinion.

Descended directly in the family of General Thomas H. Ruger
