This lovely amethyst goblet is very similar in style to Libbey's Premiere Cobalt Tulip Pattern goblets. Measuring 6 1/4 inches high, it is 1 7/8 inches across the top and has a 2 1/2-inch base.<p>

It is in excellent condition.<p>

Pictures show the goblet with and without flash.<p>

Libbey Glass Company began in the late 19th century as the New England Glass Company. The company then produced mercury glass, colored art glass, pressed glass, and other glass items necessary for the time as doorknobs and railroad lamps. They often gilded their glass in the mode of the day but also cut and engraved glass.<p>

William L. Libbey purchased New England Glass in 1877 and renamed it for himself. His son, Edward, took over the company upon his death. Edward moved production to Toledo, Ohio in 1888, where the raw materials for making glass were more accessible.<p>

Joseph Locke, an English designer who joined Libbey in 1882, patented what we know as Peach Blow, Maize and Pomona as well as Amberina, the glass which moves from amber to red in coloration. Libbey produced Amberina until around 1900. It was expensive to make--as with red and ruby glass, gold was used to make the scarlet color. Locke?s innovations at Libbey earned the company worldwide recognition.<p>

From 1878-1915 Libbey led in producing Brilliant Cut glass. The glass was highly leaded to soften the glass to ease the cutting process, add weight, sparkle, and a resounding ring. A master craftsman drew and cut the design, and ...
