Third president of the People’s Republic of China (1909–1992) who served from 1983 to 1988; considered one of the Eight Elders of the Communist Party of China. Rare glossy 9.5 x 7 photo of Li Xiannian, Helmut Kohl, and two others conversing over tea, signed in black ink by Li Xiannian in Chinese, and inscribed in black felt tip by Kohl to a German politician, dated December 28, 1984. In fine condition, with light fading to Kohl’s last name. Kohl, his wife, and the Federal Minister of Economic Cooperation, Dr. Jurgen Warnke, paid an official visit to the People’s Republic of China from October 6 to 13, 1984. This photo of Kohl’s meeting with President Li Xiannian was taken at the Large Hall of the People in Peking on October 9, 1984, a few days into the German chancellor’s visit.
