Lewis Carroll Pair of Autograph Letters Signed. Letter 1: Signed, "Lewis Carroll." Three pages, 4" x 6", Christ Church, March 5th, 1877. The letter is written to a child named Dolly; it reads in part, "…Are you gradually making up your mind to the catastrophe of a call from me? For I really think you will see me some day soon---Please picture to yourself a tallish man (about 6 feet 4 inches), very fat, with a long white beard, a bald head, & a very red face--& and then, when you see me, you will be agreeably disappointed." Almost invariably Carroll signs himself with his real name, Charles Dodgson, so this signature and interesting self evaluation is very intriguing! <r Letter 2: Signed, "C.L. Dodgson." Four pages, 4.5" x 7", Christ Church Oxford, January 31st, 1877. The letter is written to a man whose children Carroll had befriended. It reads in part, "…I am encouraged by your letter to say that next time I find myself in your neighborhood, I think I shall venture on calling, in hopes of making personal acquaintance with my 'amie inconnue.' I shall be very glad to have any of your domestic photographs--& specially if you have such a thing, an early photo of Dolly. I begin photographing my young friends at 5, usually; but a photographer who is also a father will probably not have waited so long as that…" This letter reveals Carroll's gentle nature with children, his desire to write for them, and even his wish to raise the spirits of the sick. <r Both letters are in very fine condition; usual folds are present; pencil notations are present on the first page of each letter. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
