Union general (1827–1905) who became better known as the author of the best-selling novel Ben-Hur. ALS, one page, 6.5 x 11, May 3, 1889. Letter to Secretary of the Interior John Willock Noble. In full: “If not considered improper, would you kindly inform me whether the Surveyorship General of New Mexico has been filled? If not, it is desired to present the name of a new applicant." In very good condition, with small separations along intersecting folds, pencil notations at top, and some light show-through from docketing on reverse.
