Lew Wallace Letter Mentioning a Hero of Shiloh, Lt. Col. Julius Garesche Typed Letter Signed, 1 page, 8" by 10", Crawfordsville, Indiana, November 2, 1897. To Louis Garesche in Washington, D.C. A pencil note in lower right corner, faint imprint of folds, else fine. Before Lew Wallace wrote one of best-selling novels of all time, Ben-Hur - A Story of the Christ, he was of course a Union general, who led a Division at bloody Shiloh - a battle in which Colonel Julius Garesche, riding besides General Rosecrans, was decapitated by a cannonball, bespattering Rosecrans and those around him with his blood. "Garesche's appalling death" wrote General Phil Sheridan in his memoirs, "stunned us all". This same hero was the subject of a biography written by his son, Louis, about which Wallace writes here. "I hope you will excuse me for requiring you to call my attention to the book, being a biography of your father. It was received in due time and should have been acknowledged long ago... I have had time only to glance at its contents, promising myself to go through it more thoroughly in the near future.>Q" From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
