DEAN, HARRIET, 1892-1964; MARTINEZ, ELSIE WHITAKER, 1890-1984; MARTINEZ, MICAELA, 1913-1989; HALE, VIRGINIA SWINBURNE, 1887-1981; and OTHERS. A large collection of approx. 350+ letters (both typed and handwritten) that were saved together as a group among the papers of Harriet and Elsie, dating mostly between the 1920s and 1930s, with some early 1940s. Many of the letters consist of multiple filled pages, and the collection has only been spot-read, so there is content to be discovered. The group includes a small number of postcards. Condition: Overall the letters are in good and readable condition; with the usual foldscreases, scattered spottingsoiling; envelopes with tearscreases, and most with stamps cut off. The group includes letters addressed to and written by one or both of the women; letters to Micaela Martinez (most from her mother, andor Harriet); letters from Micaela to her mother andor Harriet; and a few letters, from various senders, addressed to Virginia S. Hale, an artist and good friend of the trio. There are also numerous letters from Hale (often called "Naya"). A sampling of the other correspondents (many to be identified) include: old friend Gertrude Rigdon ("Riggy"); M. A. Newman; Ralph and Margot Pearson; artist Kisa Beck; Minna Berger; Anne Marie Sutro; Gertrude Hale; Sophie ; Pearl ; Frances (McComas?); Mary ; Betty ; Rose ; Hal ; Paget ; numerous from Mrs. L. Gottlund; Florence Hay; and many others. ALSO, see Lots 99 and 103. Harriet Dean and Elsie Martinez were partners from at least 1921-1923 when they traveled with Micaela to Paris, London, and New York, a trip that marked the beginning of a lifetime spent together writing, corresponding, studying, reading, socializing, raising family, and eventually practicing their Catholic faith. The pair went by "Pal" (an affectionate name for Harriet bestowed by Micaela "Kai" Martinez) and "Pellie" or "Pelly" for Elsie (from "Pelican", Xavier Martinez's nickname for Elsie).
