Autograph letter signed by I.W. Brashear, a constituent of Sam Houston's, and docketed ''IW Brashear / 20th Aug 1857'' by Sam Houston, as U.S. Senator of Texas. Dated 20 August 1857, Brashear writes of foul play in the election that Houston lost two weeks earlier. In part, ''As you intimated to me…the great machine of destruction was the Steam Boat Company which…changed sixty or eighty votes on the day of election. I suppose $2000 was spent…'' 2pp., 7.75'' x 9.75''. Staining, not affecting docket. Clear, dark text. Very good condition.
